Bel Aire, Kansas is a suburb of Wichita, located about 10 miles away in the northeast of the city, between State Route 254 and State Route 96. The suburb was first created in 1955, and incorporated as a city in 1980, as the population rose.
As of 2010, the population of Bel Aire was 6,769 people, and there were a total of 2,554 housing units in the city. The median income of a household in the city was $66,937, making this a wealthier suburb in the area. Only 3.7% of families and 4.8% of the population live below the poverty line, partially due to the low cost of living in the area.
The median home value in the area is $172,100 making this a more affluent suburb of Wichita, which usually has home values in the lower $100K range. The city is served by the USD 259 Public Schools Bel Aire school district, which operates a total of four schools in the area.
The city is currently embarking on an infrastructure upgrade project, intended to make it more friendly for cyclists and pedestrians, and to plan a future central park and gathering space in the center of the city.
